The word tulip is derived from Persian language “Dulband”.
In Turkish “Turban”, In French “Tulipi” Then in late 16th century the word Tulip comes, m eans a Bulbous Spring-Flower from a Plant of Lily family, In India the Tulip is popularly known as “Hoovarasi” and “Adavibende” in Kannada, and in Malayalam “Kattupoovarasi”.
The idea of Tulip flower was introduced in 1927 at a woman’s literary Club Meeting by Miss Lida Rogers, a biology teacher in Holland High School, Suggested that Holland will adopt the Tulip as its National Flower, because of its close relation with Netherland a set a day for a festival.
Now the Asia’s largest Tulip Garden popularly known as Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden was inaugurated by then the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir Mr. Gh Nabi Azad in 2007 by the Aim to promote the Tourism and promote the Floriculture of the State also. It was previously known as
Siraj- Bagh and Modern Floriculture centre, it is about 22 km from the Shaikul-alm International Srinagar Airport and 18 km from Srinagar Railway Station.
The Garden is built on the sloping ground in a terraced fashion consisting of seven terraces on the foot hills of Zaberwan Mountain.
The Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden of Srinagar Kashmir has about
1.7 millions Tulips from 73 varieties and 43 varieties of Flowers which are brought from Keukenhof Tulip Garden of Amsterdam. The variety of flowers, including Hyacinths, Daffodils, and Ranunculus which are also brought from Holland.
The Indira Tulip Garden of Srinagar Kashmir is attracted near about 30lakh or 3 Million visitors every year.
